Mykonos

/

It is almost impossible to describe Mykonos in just one page. It is after all the most famous Greek island and is established as the cosmopolitan centre of Cyclades.

Always famous for its nightlife, Myconos town is still one of the liveliest (if not the top) places in Greece after dark. When the sun goes down, the town’s maze of narrow streets and buzzing as the smart restaurants, fashionable night clubs with live entertainment, all shown into action. The nights are endless on Mykonos and can not be described. You have to be there to feel the unique atmosphere.

On the surrounding hills of Mykonos Island, brilliant white sugar – cube buildings are highlighted with splashes of colour from their bright blue shutters and beautiful flowers, and a row of windmills stands guard looking out to the open sea.

Arriving at the harbour of Mykonos we are welcomed by the windmills which together with the Pelican, are the symbols that signifies Myconos Island.

Its circular harbour is lined with stylish cafι bars and restaurants looking out on the fishing boats bobbing at anchor.

At Ornos beach you can swim at the frequently visited sandy beach with its umbrellas, water sports and luxurious tourist installations. Ornos beach is just 1 10 minutes bus drive away from Myconos town. Almost next door to Ornos Beach is Aghios Ioannis Beach where “Shirley Valentine was filmed.

Platys Yialos is the most popular beach of Mykonos. With a handful of restaurants and tavernas and 600 meters sandy beach lined with umbrellas and sun beds. Inland, about 9 km from Mykonos town, stands Ano Mera, the most populated village (other than Mykonos town) on the island. Consisting of several scattered settlements, having as center the Cloister and the Panaghia Tourliani church. The Cloister, probably founded in the 16th century and restructured in 1767, constitutes today a pole of attraction for visitors in the area. Moreover it is worth visiting the Cloister of Aghios Georgios and the Monastery of Paleokastro, on the opposite hill, on the top of which once there had been a medieval castle. Because of the area's peaceful environment and location, wherefrom visitors may have easily access to the splendid beaches of Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis and Aghia Anna, Ano Mera has been developed and nowadays offers the possibility to stay overnight. In the small central square you shall find tavernas and pastry shops serving traditional sweets.

The sunset becomes more fascinating when it is enjoyed from the neighborhood of Alefkandra in Mykonos Town the "little Venice of Mykonos", as it is called. A meeting point for gay people completes the culture of Mykonos. During the day Myconos enjoys its calmness. The dazzling sun reflects on the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the whitewashed houses. Mykonos Island is surrounded by superb beaches of yellow sand linked to Myconos town by a combination of local buses and a fleet of small fishing boats.
