Excursions (only for cruise travelers)

Ancient Mycenae & Epidaurus & Nafplion

Duration: Half day

This excursion is an unforgettable tour of both Mycenae, a fortified Bronze Age Palace, and of Epidaurus, an ancient therapeutic and religious center. Your guide will take you from the harbor at Nafplion across the exquisite mountainous landscape of the eastern Peloponnese to Mycenae.

Highlights

Ancient Mycenae

One of the earliest examples of sophisticated citadel architecture, the Bronze Age Palace was an exclusive hilltop enclave for aristocrats. The artisans and merchants were left to reside outside the city walls. It was abandoned around 1100 BC and only the floors remain.

The Treasury (“beehive”) tombs

These tombs which are outside the palace walls, were built with successive rings of masonry. You’ll see the Mycenaean kings buried with weapons and provisions for their journey to the underworld.

The Treasury of Atreus

Also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon. It dates from the 13th century BC, one of the only two-chambered tombs in Greece. We’ll then depart from Mycenae for the incredible Sanctuary of Epidaurus, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s also home to a therapeutic and religious center dedicated to Asklepios.

Temple of Asklepios and the Tholos

Masterpieces of Greek architecture dating back to the 4th century BC

Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus

This one of a kind ancient theatre was designed by Polykleitos the Younger and is so well-preserved that productions are still held throughout the Peloponnesian summer. The late Maria Callas even once performed here.

Propylaia

The massive gateway to the Asklepeion still stands at the northern entrance. You’ll find sections of the Sacred Way beneath your feet and a classical stadium with benches still intact and starting line still visible!

After the tour to the Ancient theatre of Epidaurus, we’ll return to Nafplion where you’ll have free time to deeply explore this beautiful port before we return to the ship. Some of Nafplion ports highlights include:

  • Two Turkish mosques.
  • The Archaeological Museum of Nafplion, which houses artifacts found in the area from the Prehistoric and Mycenaean eras.
  • Municipal Gallery, an arm of the Athens National Gallery.
  • The Church of Agios Spyridonas.
  • Church of Agios Georgios, home to a number of legendary murals, including a copy of Da Vinci’s “The Secret Dinner.”
